Hellas Verona and ABEO join forces for children hospitalised at Borgo Trento Hospital

The relationship between Hellas Verona and ABEO began in the summer of 2012, at the behest of then President Maurizio Setti. Over the years, numerous initiatives have been promoted in synergy between the Club and the association for the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Department of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Verona.

In particular, the two organisations have jointly promoted fundraising activities and support for the families of children suffering from haematological and oncological diseases, focusing on crucial aspects such as prevention, hospital treatment and socialisation activities.

THE 'CASA ABEO ALLOGGI' PROJECT

In 2014, ABEO took part in – and won – a public tender for the assignment of a Liberty-style villa, Villa Fantelli, located within the Borgo Trento hospital grounds. The dream of the association’s volunteers was to strengthen even further the close bond with the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology ward. That dream became a reality in 2019 with the opening of Casa ABEO.

The following year, during the months of lockdown, ABEO launched an even more ambitious project: the construction of four apartments, one for each letter in the name ABEO, intended to house the families of children admitted to the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology ward at Borgo Trento Hospital. Hellas Verona Foundation chose to fully fund the construction of the fourth apartment, symbolically representing the letter ‘O’, to which the association has chosen to link the word ‘Optimism’.

THE INAUGURATION OF CASA ELENA

On the morning of Saturday, November 23, 2024, ABEO officially opened ‘Casa Elena’ at Villa Fantelli – the new residential complex designed to welcome young patients from the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology ward of Borgo Trento Hospital and their families.

The event was attended not only by numerous volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who believe in and contribute daily to ABEO’s mission, but also by key institutional figures: the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hon. Lorenzo Fontana; Vice President of the Veneto Region, Elisa De Berti; and the Mayor of Verona, Damiano Tommasi. Also speaking at the event were ABEO President Alberto Bagnani; Callisto Bravi, General Director of the Verona Integrated Hospital System; Giovanni De Manzoni, Rector’s Representative from the University of Verona; and Simone Cesaro, Head of the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Department at the Women and Children’s Hospital of Borgo Trento.

The names of the apartments within Casa Elena – so named in memory of Elena Travenzolo, a historic figure and the heart of the Association – were inspired by the imagination of the children themselves. They chose to build on the letters of ABEO, turning them into values that have shaped the association’s work for over 30 years: Amore (Love), Bellezza (Beauty), Empatia (Empathy), and Ottimismo (Optimism). The Hellas Verona Foundation specifically contributed to the apartment dedicated to Optimism – the O one – through its fundraising initiatives.
